Megève, the iconic

Megève, a picture-postcard village resort nestling between mountains and alpine pastures, needs no introduction. Blossoming in summer, or glistening under the snow in winter, its charming little streets invite you to stroll around in a refined atmosphere. Punctuated by chic boutiques and trendy restaurants, Megève has nevertheless managed to retain the soul and poetry of a mountain village.

Megève, a success story

Once a land of mythical legends, the birth of the resort is more contemporary. It owes its rise to the Rothschild family, notably Baroness Noémie, who chose Megève as their holiday resort. She had a luxury hotel built there in 1921, which attracted royalty and celebrities. The village’s development continued when Henri Jacque Le Même, a famous architect, was commissioned to design a new type of elegant chalet combining the aesthetics of traditional farmhouses with modern comforts. It was an immediate success. Megève quickly became a high-profile, refined resort, emblematic of the French art of living. A charming resort, Megève successfully balances chic aesthetics with authentic mountain scenery. Today, as in the past, celebrities flock here to discover the many establishments dedicated to luxury, chic cocooning and partying, not forgetting the excellent cuisine. Megève boasts 4 Michelin-starred restaurants. Internationally renowned, Megève has been awarded several prestigious tourist labels, including ‘Best of the Alps’, ‘Top of French Alps’ and ‘Station village de charme’.

Numerous personalities have left their mark on the history of Megève and contributed to its aura, notably in the world of skiing with the pioneer Emile Allais, inventor with Rossignol of metal skis and creator of the French Ski School, Roger Allard, first French giant slalom champion in 1949, and Philippe Bozon in ice hockey who was the very first French player to play in the NHL.

Megève, summer and winter

Alongside the social life, the ski industry also developed with the opening of the Rochebrune cable car in 1933. The Megève ski area continued to expand over the years, offering beautiful ski lanes through the fir trees. It is now part of the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, with 162 runs over 450 km, linking Megève, St Gervais, Combloux, La Giettaz, Cordon and St Nicolas de Véroce. You’ll find all levels of slopes for family skiing, and high-altitude restaurants that reflect the image of the village: gourmet and friendly.

In summer, the verdant mountain pastures offer a host of hiking and mountain biking routes. The resort offers a host of other activities, including hot-air ballooning, acrobranche, ball trap, summer tobogganing, a riding centre, an 18-hole golf course, 15 tennis courts, an aeroclub with a flying school, and of course the Palais des Sports in the centre of the village, with its ice rink, climbing wall, swimming pool, fitness centre, etc.
