La Rosière, solar resort
Discover La Rosière
La Rosière is the only south-facing resort in the Tarentaise, less than ½ hour from Bourg Saint Maurice, at an altitude of 1850 metres. It is set out on a balcony, offering not only sunny slopes but also uninterrupted views across the Tarentaise to the Mont Blanc massif. Its two villages, the central Rosière and the more recent Les Eucherts, are only 10 minutes away by footpath. A family resort par excellence, it has undergone a life-saving facelift and moved upmarket. Village life is simple and welcoming, in an unspoilt setting. You’ll find all the mountain activities here, summer and winter alike, including hiking, paragliding, white-water sports, trail running and, of course, skiing… not forgetting the highest 9-hole golf course in Europe! A change of scenery is guaranteed with the Franco-Italian domain via the legendary Col du Petit Saint-Bernard, the border between the Tarentaise and Val d’Aoste regions, just 9 km away, encouraging links between the two countries.
A ski area between France and Italy
La Rosière and the Italian resort of La Thuile, which have been linked since 1985, have joined forces to name their Franco-Italian ski area ‘Espace San Bernardo’. This ski area, with 160 km of pistes, offers a great complementarity with very different reliefs and exposures: the south-facing French side benefits from pistes bathed in sunshine from sunrise to sunset. They are wide open and mostly easy, perfect for family skiing. Starting at 1850m, the altitude guarantees quality snow cover. The Fort sector is the highest in La Rosière, and is accessed by the Fort Express chairlift, which takes you up to the Fort de la Redoute Ruiné at 2300m. At the top of this chairlift, you’ll find a footbridge with dozens of metres of space under your feet for the Panoramic Experience: a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc and a 360° panorama between France and Italy.
After skiing between the fortifications at the border, you cross a sublime white desert by means of a long ski lift to arrive in Italy at the legendary Petit-Saint-Bernard pass. Windswept, it’s an Eden for kite-snowboarding and ski touring, with an average snowfall of 2.50 metres. Then you switch to the north-facing side of the resort of La Thuile: the snow remains cold and the slopes zigzagging between larches and pines are much steeper as you reach the resort at 1400 m, in particular the vertiginous black run that hosted a women’s speed world cup. Exceptional views of the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif and Mont Rose characterise the Italian side of the resort. With its long traverses on slopes, the Italian side of the resort is not suitable for beginner snowboarders!
At the top of the Italian side, we recommend piste no. 18, away from the lifts, a nugget offering a wild panorama that will make your eyes glaze over. That said, on the San Bernardo ski area, the view is magical wherever you are. Another advantage is that when the weather is bad on one side, it’s often fine on the other. And it’s the same for the snow: when there’s less on one side, there’s more on the other.
Let’s go back to La Rosière, where forest lovers can treat themselves to more than 1,000 m of vertical drop: the Fontaine Froide piste in the Ecudets sector runs all the way down to Séez at an altitude of 900 m, ideal for skiing when the weather is cold.
For fun skiing, the boardercross in the Fort sector uses the natural relief of a valley on a red run. Alternatively, the Petit Saint-Bernard course is now available in an XXL version: the Funcross du Petit Saint-Bernard is a fun run over 1,000 m long with modules, gongs, tunnels, whoops… The whole family will be there to enjoy new sensations on the slopes. Meet under the Plan du Repos chairlift.
Freestylers will find a well-designed snowpark equipped with kickers (3 green / 2 blue / 2 red / 1 black), rails (4 green and 7 red) and a big airbag. It’s accessible to everyone from beginners to experts, with the Poletta ski lift right next to the slalom stadium.
For safe freeride practice, the Zittieux area is ungroomed but secure.
La Rosière also offers the chance to try out ski touring in complete safety on 3 marked trails of varying lengths: the Hermine trail with a D+ (positive difference in altitude) of 754 m, the Serge trail with a D+ of 488 m and the Roc trail with a D+ of 483 m.
