Grosset-Janin : In praise of longevity
In 2025, our family business celebrates its 75th anniversary.
Four generations have succeeded one another to turn the modest workshop of the early days into a benchmark company in the construction and renovation of top-of-the-range chalets in the Savoie & Haute-Savoie, with a common thread that has never wavered over the years: expert know-how, solid wood frames and 100% local production.
Wood in your veins
To last, you need a solid foundation of values. In the Grosset-Janin family, it was Albert, the patriarch and emblematic grandfather, who instilled respect for a job well done, a sense of commitment, and a taste for entrepreneurship and innovation. Following in his father’s footsteps as a carpenter, he set up his own carpentry workshop in 1950, and it wasn’t long before he began dreaming of becoming a builder in his own right, inspired by the post-and-beam architecture emblematic of Alpine chalets. Each generation boldly followed in the footsteps of the previous one, growing up surrounded by wood shavings and nurturing the family’s passion for wood. The company became a matter of course for each of them, a bond that would never be broken, a heritage tinged with admiration.
It’s a longevity built on family roots, of course, but also on long-term commitment and lasting relationships, as well as a deep-rooted connection to the region and its architectural heritage. Today, the shareholding is still 100% family-owned, with 6 cousins at the head of the company to continue the great story, faithful to the DNA, to the vision of their trade, and to the Grosset-Janin philosophy, passing on in turn through the training of the youngest.
Art and Matter
Transforming a raw, living product into an architectural showcase, with creativity and a taste for beautiful things as the only limits. This is the transformation that takes place when technical expertise is put to work.
At Grosset-Janin, our know-how has always been in-house, and each of our woodworking skills is mastered, developed and constantly improved to ensure identifiable quality. Carpentry, interior and exterior joinery, fittings, made-to-measure furniture, then as now, Grosset-Janin stands out for its 100% local manufacturing process, in its workshops in Domancy, and its total control of the entire production chain, from carpentry to windows, staircases and kitchen furniture. Driven by curiosity and a taste for a challenge, Albert, and then his sons and grandsons after him, have constantly pushed back the boundaries of their trade and honed their unfailing knowledge of wood, a material with infinite possibilities.
The fruit of many years’ experience and a keen eye for detail, over the years the company has developed its own quality standards in terms of machining, assembly and finishing, to offer beautifully crafted turnkey chalets that stand the test of time.
The Alpine Spirit
The chalet is part of our mountain heritage, and speaks to everyone’s imagination.
By specialising in post-and-beam construction, an ancestral building system typical of mountain chalets, Grosset-Janin has sought to preserve the traditional aesthetic and harmony of the mountain landscape, while opting for an architecture that is highly adaptable to contemporary trends. We continue to give pride of place to wood and use only solid timber frames which become an essential part of the décor. Respect for the product and its environment remains at the heart of our concerns, we use mountain timber for its robustness and better ageing in its natural environment. We select our timber from local sawmills to exacting specifications, guaranteeing superior quality.
Over the generations, the company has evolved to offer a turnkey, made-to-measure service, in line with its customers’ wishes, without ever abandoning its soul as a carpenter and the imperative of building according to the rules of the trade, majestic but without ostentation, and integrating perfectly into the landscape. These are signature chalets with a distinctive style, and above all, they are warm, welcoming places to live, where people enjoy meeting up and celebrating the art of mountain living… and the family spirit.
