Chalet Ursie

Complete renovation of a chalet in Les Houches

How to modernize a chalet through renovation

This 244-square-meter project involved a complete renovation—both exterior and interior—that has revitalized this chalet, originally built in 1991.

The interior of the chalet was stripped down to its bare bones, and certain structural elements were modified. All flooring (including the screed and concrete slab) was removed and replaced, as were all partitions, drop ceilings, woodwork, electrical wiring, plumbing, the heating system, the stairs, and the fireplace, which was even relocated to the heart of the living area. A metal skylight was installed on the mezzanine, adding a very contemporary and stylish touch.

Of course, the interior layout was completely redesigned. Our in-house design team reworked the spatial design and added amenities such as the ski room, sauna, and wine cellar.

The entire interior layout—including built-in cabinets, bookshelves, bunk beds with drawers, vanity units, and the kitchen—was crafted from reclaimed wood for its authentic and warm appearance. The kitchen and bathroom countertops, made of solid granite slabs, accentuate the natural, raw aesthetic.

The existing interior spruce framework was preserved and sandblasted (a process of industrial sandblasting and air blasting mastered in-house at Grosset-Janin) to restore its natural appearance, while the exterior facades were sandblasted, revealing a lighter wood tone.

Outside, the terrace has been significantly expanded, the openings have been modified, and all the woodwork has been replaced (windows, railings, front door, and garage door), as well as the roof. Local stone cladding has been added to enhance the chalet’s aesthetic appeal.

The entire project was designed and carried out by Grosset-Janin.
